Training Born in Geneva on the 13th November 1974, Chris Monney passed his law degree at the University of Geneva, and obtained a degree in International Relations at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (UHEI). Having completed his legal training at the law firm Lenz & Staehelin, the largest commercial firm in Switzerland, he obtained his bar certificate in Geneva in 2006. He is a member of the Geneva Bar Association and joined Capt & Wyss as a partner in April 2013. Experience With a particular interest in public law, Chris Monney worked as parliamentary assistant whilst completing his legal studies. After obtaining his bar certificate, he took up employment with the State of Geneva, where for a period of two years he led a legal team at the Territorial Planning Ministry. Following this, he moved to the Directorate General of Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Regional, Economic and Health Affairs (DARES), where he worked under Minister Pierre-François Unger. During his 5 years as a senior official at DARES, Chris Monney was entrusted with a number of duties, often of an important strategic nature regarding the development and improvement of the framework of the Genevan economy. For example, he headed the team responsible for the preparation of the Government draft law for the revitalization of Genevan industry and the rationalisation of the territorial development, achieved by the creation of active mixed development zones. This law was unanimously passed by the Genevan Parliament (law L10861). He was also entrusted with the responsibility of preparing two important drafts for a legislative overhaul, within the ambit of the Government and relating to the Genevan economy, involving the specific areas of the professional transportation of persons, as well as of catering, hotels and entertainment. Furthermore, he took on responsibility for the implementation of the Federal Law on the acquisition of real property by foreign individuals or corporations (LFAIE) and, for a period of one year, he was the head of the DARES legal department. Practice areas Chris Monney specialises in administrative law, in particular in the areas of public contracts, territorial development, those professions and activities which are subject to State authorisation and supervision, as well as the acquisition of real property by foreign nationals, be they private individuals or corporations. On the basis of his considerable experience in public law, his extensive knowledge of the Civil Service together with its internal operating procedures, Chris Monney is in a unique position to defend the interests of both private individuals and companies, whether Swiss or from abroad, in many areas involving the State authorities.
